Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Here's a dare for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of scary movies: Sit down with your partner and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 has now made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it may seem like standard biological terror, but inside Together exists a profound meditation about our choices in loving one another.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together is the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for a decade. Married in real life in 2017, the two stars contribute a unique chemistry to their roles, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The story commences when Millie and Tim relocate from the urban environment to the rural area for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical story element, of course, but that’s largely where the tropes end. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the two discover an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a strange force takes hold of the pair. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past simple connection.

The complete narrative is a slow burn fright fest, weaving in bits of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but never too gross) physical transformations, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and presents them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and far away from his support system. He dreads the idea of completely losing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in Together never makes Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Both characters face the kind of problems that arise in any relationship after ten years. At their core, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these anxieties of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism does not come across as clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Conversely, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could act as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply look at your other half and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can experience today.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu at present.
