European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
